Dental Insurance North Carolina & South Carolina Residents Trust
Looking for dental insurance North Carolina residents actually use? So are thousands of your neighbors. PPO, DHMO, and discount plans are all available from Ameritas and Aetna — and I help you find the right one at no extra cost.
Dental insurance in the Carolinas doesn’t have to be hard to figure out. I compare PPO, DHMO, and discount dental plans from top carriers and work with Ameritas and Aetna, two of the strongest dental networks in the country. Whether you’re buying your first plan or switching, I’ve got you covered.
Compare Dental Insurance North Carolina & South Carolina Plans
Plans vary a lot in cost and coverage, so comparing your options before you choose is important. A PPO plan may cost more each month, yet it gives you the freedom to see any dentist and gets you a bigger network. A DHMO can save you money each month but limits you to a specific network. A discount plan isn’t insurance but can be a good fit for people who mostly need cleanings and routine care.
Ameritas Dental Plans
Ameritas is one of the largest dental insurance carriers in the country, with strong networks in both Carolinas. Their plans cover the standard three categories:
- Preventive care — typically covered at 100% with no waiting period. Cleanings, exams, X-rays.
- Basic services — fillings, extractions, root canals. Usually covered at 70-80% after a short waiting period.
- Major services — crowns, bridges, dentures, implants. Covered at 50%, typically after a 6-12 month waiting period.
Most Ameritas plans have annual maximums between $1,000 and $2,500. Higher maximums mean higher premiums — I’ll help you figure out which tier makes sense for your dental history.
Aetna Dental Plans
Aetna offers both PPO and DHMO options in North Carolina and South Carolina. Their PPO plans give you the flexibility to see any dentist, with the biggest savings when you stay in-network. Their DHMO plans typically cost less each month but restrict you to a specific network.
Aetna PPO is a good fit if you already have a dentist you like and want to keep seeing them. Aetna DHMO makes sense if premium savings matter more than provider choice.
What About Waiting Periods?
This is the detail that surprises most people. Most dental plans have waiting periods on basic and major services — typically 3-6 months for basic work and 6-12 months for major services. That means if you need a crown next month and buy a plan today, you’ll likely still be paying out of pocket.
Some plans waive waiting periods if you had prior dental coverage. A few plans have no waiting periods at all but cost more. I’ll be upfront about which plans have what restrictions, because this is where a lot of people get frustrated after the fact.
Dental Insurance for Medicare Beneficiaries
If you’re on Original Medicare, dental isn’t covered — not cleanings, not fillings, not dentures. A standalone dental plan is the standard fix. I offer plans that pair well with your Medicare Supplement and don’t overlap with anything Medicare already covers.
How I Help
Tell me your dental situation, budget, and whether you have a dentist you want to keep. I’ll compare the plans available to you in your county and be direct about which one fits — including when the answer is a discount plan instead of insurance. My compensation is the same regardless of which plan you pick, so there’s no reason to steer you toward the wrong one.
